It’s Official We Came Up!

Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt, right, and West Side Leadership Academy Principal Terrance Little visit a classroom Monday at the school in Gary.

After five years of being in danger of state intervention, West Side Leadership Academy has climbed to a C from an F for the 2014-15 school year.

The Indiana State Board of Education met Tuesday morning and unanimously approved school grades. Schools had known their grades since November, but grades are not deemed official until the state BOE formally approves them.

Happy New Year From The Entire West Side Family!

Mr-Little-web“The strongest factor for success is self-esteem: Believing you can do it, believing you deserve it and believing you’ll get it.” I am opening with this quote because this is the best time of year to make a change. Everyone is motivated. Everyone has new energy and everyone is hoping for a better year than the previous one.

Here at West Side, we believe that every student is capable of success although success doesn’t look the same for every student. As a school, we are here to equip students with the tools that they need to achieve all of their dreams in life. We also believe that we are here to teach out students how to think, not tell them what to think. We are here to let them know that life is only 10% of what happens to them and 90% of how they react to it. By instilling these values in our students, we will truly prepare them for whatever they want to achieve in life.

In committing to prepare our students to live a successful life, we are also committed to working with you, the parents and guardians, to give you the opportunity to be active in your child’s education. Separately, we can each help the students to do better; but together, we can completely transform each individual child, the school and the neighborhood. Again, I invite you come to the school. Meet with your child’s teachers and participate in our events. If you have suggestions on how to increase our reach to the parents, please let your Parent Assistant know. As a school, we have committed to not only engaging students, but engaging parents as well.

I look forward to seeing you at the school!!!West-Side

Sincerely yours,

Terrance A. Little, Principal
West Side Leadership Academy

School History

West Side Leadership Academy is a public high school located on the west side of Gary, Indiana in a residential, urban setting. The population of Gary is approximately 80,300. In 1968, West Side High School opened its doors for grades 9-12 in a flourishing neighborhood that was well-maintained and a community of people that worked and lived in unity.

In 2009, West Side acquired grades 7 & 8 and remained a 7-12 school until the end of the 2013-2014 school year. Changes in the city of Gary have also affected West Side, whose student population is reflective of the population of the surrounding neighborhood. West Side serves a predominantly African-American student population.

For the 2014-2015 school year, enrollment was just under 900. In spite of the unique challenges facing West Side, it is still standing and making strides in the right direction! With the leadership of the new administration, West Side hopes to become one of the best high schools in Northwest Indiana.
