The Gary Community School Corporation and West Side Leadership Academy (WSLA) families have suffered a tremendous loss in the sudden passing of science teacher Sheridan Smith.
A victim of a massive heart attack, Smith was 54 and adored by the students, staff and faculty across the district. His service in education extended beyond the classroom having served as the Teacher’s Union building representative at WSLA and secretary of the Gary Teacher’s Union Local 4.
“Our hearts are extremely heavy today,” said Chief of Schools Dr. Esther Goodes. “Mr. Smith dedicated his life’s work to the children of Gary through his love of science, specifically Chemistry and Physics, and his love of people. He will be dearly missed.”
WSLA students were informed of Smith’s passing this morning during special assemblies. Grief counselors will be onsite to provide support to those in need. Details for services honoring the life of Smith will be shared once available.
