(Gary, IND) – The Gary Community School Corporation is proud to recognize schools across the district for their commitment to improving student attendance during the month of December and for reinforcing the message that every day in school matters.
Gary Middle School received the Traveling Attendance Trophy and has been recognized as the district’s December Attendance Winner, posting an 85.42% average daily attendance rate for the month. This achievement reflects the collective efforts of students, families, educators, and school leadership to prioritize consistent attendance and student engagement.
The district also celebrates strong attendance efforts at McCullough Academy and Glen Park Academy, which were named December runners-up with attendance rates of 84.9% and 84.78%, respectively. As part of their attendance initiatives, students who achieved perfect attendance received attendance t-shirts, reinforcing positive habits and acknowledging student commitment.
Across Indiana, attendance is a shared priority. The State of Indiana has established a goal of 94% student attendance, recognizing that regular school attendance is closely tied to academic achievement, literacy development, graduation outcomes, and long-term success. Reaching this goal requires strong partnerships between schools, families, and communities to ensure students are present, supported, and engaged every day.
“These schools are demonstrating what is possible when attendance is intentionally supported and celebrated,” said Antionette Ferguson-Dixon, Director of Student Services. “Recognizing student effort and building a culture that values being present helps lay the foundation for academic growth and lifelong success.”
The Gary Community School Corporation continues to focus on attendance through family engagement strategies, student incentives, and school-based supports designed to reduce barriers and encourage daily participation in learning.
