(Gary, IND) - On December 9th, the criminal justice students at the Gary Area Career Center were featured during a demonstration of the VirTra Training System, technology that focuses on de-escalation and conflict resolution tactics at crime scenes and other locations where intervention is needed to defuse a situation. The system includes a 3-D screen, software that contains hundreds of "crime scenarios" and props for trainees to use as they "act out" the scenarios.
Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Stokes delivered greetings and congratulated the students on their mastery of de-escalation concepts and their interest in law enforcement technology.
"The Gary Area Career Center exists so that students can explore various career paths, obtain certifications and prepare for life after graduation," said Stokes. "We are so proud of these young people for taking the initiative to learn this technology as they discover careers in law enforcement."
City of Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon was in attendance accompanied by a host of "rookie" officers who tested the VirTra System alongside the students.
"I am excited because this technology will not only provide safety for our community but strengthen ties between our youth and our police officers," said Cannon.
The course is instructed by Col. Richard Ligon.
"When the system was first installed, the students likened it to a video game," said Ligon. "They soon learned the seriousness of the scenarios and the importance of using de-escalation tactics for survival. The goal is for everyone to walk away alive."
The criminal justice program features a 2-year curriculum for juniors and seniors enrolled at the Gary Area Career Center. In addition to the training, students take field trips to various law enforcement facilities, including the Lake County Government Center and even the county morgue.
"We are giving them as many real-life experiences as possible so that can make sound decision on their career paths," added Ligon.
Ligon also mentioned that students will earn their certifications as corrections officers next semester.
