knowledge-bowl-2026-winners

(Gary, IND) β€” The Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) proudly celebrates West Side Leadership Academy for securing its third consecutive victory at the Steel City Knowledge Bowl hosted by Indiana University Northwest on February 28, 2026.

Focused on city of Gary history, Black History facts and cultural literacy, the annual academic competition brings together high schools from across Northwest Indiana for a spirited test of knowledge, teamwork, and academic excellence. This year’s event expanded its regional reach with two additional contenders β€” East Chicago High School and Bishop Noll Institute β€” further intensifying the competition.

In a thrilling repeat of last year’s finale, the championship round once again featured a Cougar standoff -- West Side Leadership Academy vs. 21st Century Charter School. Demonstrating poise, preparation, and deep knowledge of Black History, West Side Leadership Academy emerged victorious β€” claiming the Steel City Knowledge Bowl trophy for the third time in three years.

This year’s championship team included:

  • Destiny Burnett

  • Jamie Jones

  • McKayla Hair

  • Joel Moore

  • Rachel Davis

  • Aniya Navarro

  • Kaylin Quarles

  •  Alicia Thomas

The team was coached and sponsored by Beverly Goodson, whose leadership and dedication continue to elevate academic excellence and competitive scholarship at West Side Leadership Academy.

The Steel City Knowledge Bowl challenges students to demonstrate mastery across historical milestones, influential leaders, cultural movements, civic impact, and contributions of African Americans throughout history. The event not only highlights academic achievement but also reinforces the importance of cultural awareness and historical understanding.

Dr. Dorothy Frink, Interim Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs at Indiana University Northwest, commended the students’ dedication and excellence.

β€œThe level of preparation and passion displayed by these students is truly inspiring. Competitions like the Steel City Knowledge Bowl showcase the intellectual strength of our region’s scholars and reinforce the importance of understanding and honoring Black History," said Frink. "West Side Leadership Academy’s continued success speaks to their commitment to academic excellence and teamwork.”

Gary Community School Corporation leadership also applauded the scholars, coaches, and families who supported the team’s achievement.

β€œThis three-peat victory reflects the discipline, preparation, and leadership that define West Side Leadership Academy,” said Carl Scott, principal at West Side Leadership Academy. β€œOur students continue to demonstrate that Gary scholars can compete β€” and win β€” at the highest levels. We are extremely proud of them.”

As West Side Leadership Academy celebrates this historic three-year sweep, GCSC remains committed to fostering academic rigor, cultural literacy, and opportunities that prepare students for college, career, and civic leadership.
