Congressman Frank Mrvan visits West Side Leadership Academy
(Gary, IND) – One day before Election Day, Congressman Frank Mrvan was spending time in freshman history class at West Side Leadership Academy. Although not old enough to vote, the impromptu visit was a chance for students to ask questions and learn about the work Mrvan does in Washington D.C. on behalf of Northwest Indiana.
While engaging students and elaborating about his experience in government, Mrvan stressed the importance of knowing history and being civically engaged. He shared his experience of managing the visit for President Barack Obama, then Senator Obama, when he was running for president in 2008 as well as his encounter with current President Biden.
“I love history, and I think it’s vitally important,” said Mrvan. “History gives us a vehicle to learn what other societies have done well and mistakes they have made.”
Congressman Frank Mrvan serves Northwest Indiana as the Representative for Indiana’s First Congressional District. His visit was arrange by History instructor Paul Day.
“It was an honor to be able to introduce my students to Congressman Mrvan,” said Day. “Some of the best lessons taught in the classroom come from real live subjects with real life experiences to share.”
