Gary Community School Corporation Invites Community Input on Building Demolition

(Gary, IND) – The Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) has plans to demolish one to two buildings owned by the district and is seeking community input on which of the (5) properties should be a priority. An online survey has been created for citizens to voice their opinions and help with the selection of which building will be demolished.

“The buildings up for demolition are beyond the point of repair, and we want to attract buyers who can re-purpose and revitalize the space once it has been cleared,” said Dr. Paige McNulty, Manager of GCSC. “It is important that the community is given the opportunity to provide input.”

The buildings being evaluated for demolition are as follows:

Ambridge School (4th Ave & Marshall Street)

Duncan School (1110 West 21st Ave)

Melton School (4581 Fillmore Street)

Norton School (1356 Harrison Street)

Riley School (1301 E. 43rd Ave)

“Ideally, all of the buildings would be demolished, but the funding to support this concept is not available,” added McNulty.

Funds designated for the demolition are from Senate Bill 1065, which was authored by State Senator Eddie Melton.

In addition to the buildings being considered for demolition, the district still has the following (3) properties for sale:

Lincoln School (1988 Polk St)

Webster School (3720 Pierce St)

Roosevelt School (730 W. 25th Ave)

The building demolition survey will remain active online until Thanksgiving. For more information visit garyschools.org.
